Description (Service) Promotes, investigates, reports and enforces public health and safety including:
FOOD SAFETY - food premises' inspection by Public Health Inspectors; Eat Smart! awards. SAFE WATER - inquiries about municipal drinking water quality; well water testing; public pool inspections; beach water sampling and information about summer beach closures. Recreational water facilities, beach water, spa and personal service locations are inspected and results reported on website. RABIES CONTROL - see website for low-cost rabies clinics. PLAYGROUND SAFETY - recreational camps and day nursery playgrounds (not municipal parks or school playgrounds). ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH - includes participation in Regional emergency responses planning; pesticide reduction guidelines; strategies to improve outdoor air quality (smog advisories and alerts). INDOOR AIR QUALITY - issues such as mould, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, temperature and humidity, volatile organic compounds (formaldehyde, solvents, cleaning agents, copiers and printers, etc.). OUTDOOR AIR QUALITY - York Region is committed to improving outdoor air quality and reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. The Health Services Department is co-ordinating the Corporate Clean Air Steering Committee to develop 4 action plans as identified in the Corporate Model for Clean Air including the Auto Trip Reduction Plan, Corporate Smog Alert Plan, Green Fleets Plan and the Green Procurement Plan. PESTICIDES - The goal of the Guidelines is to restrict the non-essential use of pesticides on lands owned by the Regional Municipality of York by implementing the principles of Plant Health Care and Integrated Pest Management. This strategy focuses on preventative maintenance activities involving the use of biological, physical, mechanical or cultural controls as a substitute for chemicals. Reduced Risk Products are to be used only as a last resort. WEST NILE VIRUS - prevention and control plans. Dead crows and blue jays are to be reported to the Health Connection Information Line.
